I bought a Hercules mandolin stand It’s gonna come in handy when I’m part of a band I bought Elixir 80/20 strings Now all I need is the mandolin So get me a vintage clean eight string mandolin Just me and my vintage eight string mandolin I hear that there’s a great life to be had Busking the world living hand to mouth I’m gonna get away and sing As soon as I learn to play this thing So get me a vintage clean eight string mandolin Just me and my vintage eight string mandolin I used to play a battered Takamine guitar Had a hatful of hope, dream’t that I’d go far But I’m still singing here in this bar But I’m never gonna give in Just get me and a vintage eight string mandolin I think I’m finally gonna take my chance To sail round the world or catch a ferry to France It’s a good place to begin It’s not so far to get home again So get me a vintage clean eight string mandolin Just me and my vintage eight string mandolin

5 O’Clock is my mistress She tells me when to rise She is with me each morning Wakes me when I’m tired She wakes me when I’m tired Let me sleep, let me sleep for just an hour more Let me sleep, let me sleep if just for today I can wait, I can wait for the morning light Until then please let me lay 5am is my weakness I’m so easily led She steps lightly from darkness To wake me from my bed She wakes me from my bed Let me sleep, let me sleep for just an hour more Let me sleep, let me sleep if just for today I can wait, I can wait for the morning light Until then please let me lay She gets inside of me Lying so restlessly Pushing me out to the dawn Laying so jealously All through the night with me Then with the morning she’s gone She’s gone 5 O’Clock in the morning So familiar to me Like a thief you come creeping in And steal away with my dreams You steal away my dreams

Take Me Home 03:51
Well I worked me self hard in the rigging of your ship As we sailed every ocean that’s known And I slaved for my passage to pay for me trip Just to earn me return to my home Well I swabbed out the dark holds and scrubbed up your decks And I longed for the day I’d be free Oh the sight of the ocean is making me sick Get me back to me home ‘cross the sea Take me home, take me home I’m begging ya please take me home The life of a sailor is not one for me Take me home, won’t ya please take me home As I swig on me rum and go down for the night And reflect upon what I’ve become Just an unwilling shipmate with no land in sight Dreaming of where I’ve come from I remember that fair lass I left on the shore Many months ago when we set sail And I vow when I next hold her to me again I will never be tempted to stray Take me home, take me home I’m begging ya please take me home The life of a sailor is not one for me Take me home, won’t ya please take me home As we toss and we turn through this sea black as oil As we sail ever onwards each day Through the night’s full of storms and the day’s full of toil God I wish there was some other way Cos I’ve been round the world and I’ve seen all the sights But there’s one place I still long to be And God when I’m back on that dry land again I will never return to the sea

My heart's not in this anymore Spin on my heel and find the door Things aren’t the way they used to be I won’t play to this gallery Get up and play another song Try to engage with anyone You play your part and then you leave It doesn’t matter much to me I’ve found myself a better love Now all I had is not enough A change is coming I can see I won’t play to this gallery

Stargazing 02:41
Stargazing and dream chasing There’s something of the night In each of us tonight Cloud breaking and moon bathing There’s magic in the light The silver and the white Clear skies, clear heart’s And I gotta tell you that In clear skies, clear hearts can fly Dog biting and bar fighting The effort of the day Will move you on your way Sun burning and the world turning Another day is gone Another night switched on Clear skies, clear heart’s And I gotta tell you that In clear skies, clear hearts can fly And I promise you the sun shining high And I promise you a bright starlit sky And I promise you that while I can I gotta tell you that In clear skies, clear hearts can fly

There is only you and me Two lost souls clinging to a song Stepping lightly through this minefield Scared to move for putting a foot wrong But every box has got a song in it’s wood Don’t let them be misunderstood There is only you and me Two lost souls clinging to a song

Look at me I’m far too old to care Looking back won’t get you anywhere Take a look at the good times that have gone and move on Look at me looking forward not looking back Look at me I’ve come too far to drop Looking out for the next new place to stop Keeping my eye’s firmly on the journey coming up Look at me looking forward not looking back Life can be extraordinary Filled with satisfaction and regret Funny how you find that every thing you want’s Not always what you get

He was a vee dub, type 2, ’69, aircooled Bay window, old style purple camper van He had a dashboard flower garland, psychedelic panel cover Sunshine, hand painted cooker in the back We had 6 years together, it seemed to take forever Slowly, rolling, carrying the load But time goes fast and something’s never last So we came to the end of the road End of the road, you gotta let the good times roll End of the road and when it’s time you have to let go Breakdown, tow truck, won’t start, no spark Aircooled Workshop, trying to make him go Another handbrake seized on, hot wheel disc burn Electric wire, engine fire, he really had to go Oooh you gotta let the good time’s roll Oooh you gotta let the good time’s go

about

“Early in 2017 I spent some time at Vi-Vid studio in Brighton with an acoustic guitar and mandolin where I laid down these eight new songs trying to keep it simple and spontaneous.

The album was performed, written and produced by myself whilst percussion, cajon and drums were provided by Javier Forero and octave guitar was played by Tim Kent. The album was recorded mixed and mastered by Simon Scardanelli.

The songs take you on adventures and travels via mandolins and night skies; campervans, press gangs and faith in the impossible; early mornings, being past caring and making fresh starts.

For those who like to categorise, you could say the album has a melodic folk pop vibe of early 70’s releases from the likes of Cat Stevens or Paul Simon with maybe a splash of Ray Davies mixed in. Thanks for listening hope you enjoy it.” - JLM
